Message of the Month

The Law of the Garbage Truck

Early one morning, I was going to fill up our vehicle at our local convenience store.  As usual, I was in a big hurry!  But I couldn’t pull in where the gas pump was at due to all the garbage from the trash can being tipped over.  I thought to myself, ‘Someone needs to pick up all of this trash, so people can fill up their vehicles!’  Just as that thought was going through my mind the Lord spoke to my heart, ‘Mark, why don’t you pick it up?’  My reply was, ‘Lord, I didn’t dump it!  Someone else did it!  I don’t even work here!’  Well, that wasn’t the response that He wanted to hear!  So, I picked up all of the trash, filled up my vehicle, and went forth into my day.  After doing all of this, the Lord spoke to my heart again saying, ‘Mark, you must pick up the trash in your life (yours & others), before you can go and fulfill your destiny!’

Many people are like ‘garbage trucks’.  They run around full of garbage, full of frustrations, full of anger, and full of disappointments.  As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it, and sometimes they’ll dump it on you.  Don’t take it personally.  Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.  Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.  The bottom line is that successful people do not let ‘garbage trucks’ take over their day.  Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ‘Love the people who treat you right.  Pray for the ones who don’t, and love them too.’

In life, you can’t say, ‘Don’t lay that trash on me!,’ because someone is going to dump on you!  I wish it wasn’t so.  Life would be so much better, if everyone lived by The Golden Rule found in Luke 6:31, “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.”

What do you do when someone dumps on you?

1. Don’t take it personal! (Luke 7:18-23)  Always remember, God doesn’t dump on people!  Don’t take offense when someone dumps on you!  Be able to look through the garbage and trash and see a hurting person.  It’s a true saying that hurting people, hurt people.  Choose to love them anyway!  Be able to say like Jesus in Luke 23:34, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

2. Don’t take their garbage that’s just been dumped on you and spread it to others! (Romans 12:14,17-21)  Be like God!  Overcome evil with good!  Repay no one evil for evil!  Don’t share their garbage!  Take it to the dump, where it belongs!

3. Don’t let ‘garbage trucks’ take over your day! (Ephesians 4:26-27,29-32)  When we let ‘garbage trucks’ run us over and take over our day, we tend to take out our frustrations, anger, and disappointments on those closest to us and those we really love, like our spouse and children.  I like what a person told me one time about ‘garbage trucks’, “Just don’t let them rent space in your head!”  I like that!  Don’t give place to the devil!

The Law of the Garbage Truck is loving people like Jesus loves people.  This kind of love is a choice.  It’s an act of your will.  It’s not by feelings.  It’s a committed and sacrificial love.  Remember, your choice of loving ‘garbage trucks’ may be the key that unlocks their salvation!  It may also be the key that unlocks your destiny!
